Limited Gardening Space? No Problem!

If you have limited space for gardening, don’t limit your creativity – just be a smart gardener!

For the house and garden to compliment each other, keep your garden along the same lines as the house’s character and make sure which areas get the most sunlight, so that the correct plants are planted in the correct places.

To create an illusion of space, divide the garden into levels with a raised platform for an entertainment area. Platforms create a spacious look and with the right plants/trees in the right corners, you can create a magical garden without feeling suffocated.

Curved pathways with curved flowerbeds rather than straight beds also create a feeling of space and tranquillity. Adding a water fountain or water feature will also attract attention and create a sense of peacefulness.

The different kinds of plants you use is also important. With light coloured plants at the back of dark coloured plants, you create a sense of depth. While you should use different colours, textures, sizes and shapes, try to limit yourself to two or three colours along with green. Larger plants can be used, but keep things in proportion, going from big to small backward in, and not the other way around.

Using glass and mirrors to decorate your garden is a good idea because it adds to the illusion of space and openness. Too many colours and features will make your garden look cluttered, so it’s best to stick to the basics: a few small decorations should do.

To attract the attention upward, make use of climbing plants and vines and if possible, paint the walls in light, neutral colours such as creams, beige or white. Dark painted walls makes the space look a lot smaller.

For small city gardens to look good, it needs a lot of care and attention so make sure you read the instructions of the plants before planting. If a plant needs sunlight, make sure you plant it where it gets ample sunlight and enough water. Also use the correct plant feed and compost in your garden to make sure all plants are healthy. If you see snails or other plant eating insects, make sure to use the correct pest control for your plants.
