A fresh coat of paint can work wonders for any room or house and if you plan on doing it yourself, make sure you do a great paint job!
Getting started is usually the worst part of the job, once you are painting and everything starts looking new again, you will enjoy doing it. To help you not get frustrated while busy painting it is best to organise everything that you’ll need before starting to paint. Gather all the paint, brushes, rollers, hammers, plastic wrap, paint can openers and everything else that you’ll need.
Remember that it takes time to do a good (or great!) paint job and you shouldn’t be rushed. First, move all furniture to the centre of the room. Then patch cracks and holes and put painter’s tape of buff tape around doors and windows and cover wall and ceiling light fixtures with large plastic bags.
Cover all furniture with plastic if they cannot be removed from the room entirely. It is advisable to remove light switch plates and outlet covers and even cabinet knobs and hinges. You can even clean these while you’re at it!
Fix walls that have holes or cracks before you start with the paint. Wash all the walls with sugar soap and make sure all walls are clean and dry.
Once you have started the paint job, make sure you cover all walls with the roller and all corners with a brush. Once the first coat is dry, do the second coat the same way. Make sure you roll horizontically and vertically to create an even finish. Once the second coat is dry and you are satisfied, remove tape from doors and windows and check for any paint splatters and spots. Clean these before moving the furniture back.
Wash your brushes and rollers and make sure you scrape excess paint or drips from windows, tiles or glass with a razor blade.
If you have leftover paint, store it in a air tight glass jar and label it with all the important information such as the date, the colour number and the room that you used it in. This way you will have paint available for touching up scratches or dents and you will be able to purchase more of the exact same paint in future.
